The recovery of hearts for transplantation from a donor after circulatory determination of death (DCDD) is currently not practiced in the U.S. There are clinical and ethical concerns which have prevented these types of cases from being pursued. As patients continue to die on the national waitlist, the donation and transplantation community must identify innovative ways or challenge past and current practices to evaluate if there are new perspectives and information which can push the boundaries.
