Thrilled to go to an ASCA (https://swimmingcoach.org/) meeting and see Coach Bob Bowman speak for two hours. By joining ASCA you can watch the full video of Bob Bowman as well as ASCA's remarkable collection of videos on swim technique and perfromance. As a swimmer and a coach I learned a lot with ASCA's underwater videos taken from the front, side and top views of the world's most successful swimmers. In this clip, Bob Bowman describes pool training for his elite Olympians as well as for age group swimmers. The title was "IM Training Throughout the Season" with the philosophy that training all swimmers for all strokes is necessary to develop the best competitive swimmers. In Chapter 2 of Crete Swim (https://www.creteswim.com) I wrote about differences between open water swimming and pool swimming, and in Chapter 5 I discussed racing in open water competitions. Pool swimming is valuable for learning technique and improving fitness so that you're ready to enjoy the open water routes in my book. Bob Bowman's presentation gives nice ideas on planning a weekly training schedule with many examples of workout sets, all of which can be tailored to your abilities. 00:00 Weekly training schedule 04:19 Repetition is the highest form of learning, that's Aristotle 06:05 Monday power and threshhold work 07:28 Tuesday active rest, 50/50 anaerobic/aerobic, back/breast 08:47 Wednesday recovery 10:00 Thursday IM aerobic, free IM, ladders 11:09 Friday power work, kicking, 1000 kick for time 12:52 Saturday, lactate tolerance, 10 x 100 fast/100EZ, 4 minutes 18:50 Anaerobic threshold, clearing blood lactate 20:25 Philosophy on fly, go to church and pray 23:06 Our underwater work, do not do this with your age group swimmers 30:49 When I went to France, the "French descend" 31:58 Another fly set , something Leon did 33:13 Deriving threshold time 35:13 Sodium bicarbonate, not recommended Open water pool training is best done in a 50 meter pool and would include longer freestyle distance sets. For example, Coach Fred Vergnoux (Summer McIntosh coach) has a Tuesday morning set of 5x500, 5x400, 5x300, 5x200, 5x100 with intervals. However, his Monday afternoon is nine times of 1x150 2:00 strong/smooth, 2x100 1:20 faster, and 3x50 all out; 1x paddles+buoy, 1xfins, 1xswim. In Chapter 2 I recommend learning other strokes to "give those freestyle muscles a break." For example, breaststroke is great because the head up and forward position allows for sighting and breathing, and it is a natural and powerful stroke for swimming underwater. My breaststroke technique improved greatly by having masters swimming coaches and attending a clinic by Olympian Evgenii (Yev) Somov.
