Subscribe to Dark Skies: https://bit.ly/dark5skies In the 1970s, classified under the codename Have Blue, U.S. aerospace manufacturer Lockheed Martin built a first-of-its-kind proof of concept demonstrator aircraft in the rather unique shape of a diamond. It would be the very first fixed-wing craft designed with the express purpose of avoiding detection by radar. Actual flight dynamics were of secondary concern. In fact, before the Have Blue project had its first test flight, engineers were doubtful the demonstrator could even fly, nicknaming the prototype “the Hopeless diamond” - a play-on-words referencing the famed Hope Diamond. Even though the project would go on to be developed into the first-ever stealth fighter, the F-117A Nighthawk, the engineers wouldn’t be entirely wrong… Two Have Blues were built, but neither survived...
