The Nantahala Hiking Club maintains the Standing Indian Shelter. The shelter is located a short distance off of the AT. Hiking North from Deep Gap, it is about 1 mile away and 1.5 miles before the summit of Standing Indian Mountain. Built in 1996. The shelter sleeps 8 with tent sites nearby. There is a large area for cooking or just relaxing on the bench when inclement weather is threatening. An alternating 2-seat privy is nearby. The water source is a stream opposite the side trail to the shelter. Do NOT leave unwanted gear (or trash for that matter) at shelters. Eventually someone else will have to pack out your irresponsibility. Properly plan your hiking adventure to prevent carrying too much. Remember, 'Pack it In, Pack it Out.' I have packed out numerous items from the trail, including a similar chair and also a larger one.
