In this origin story, he plays a Shakespeare not yet defined by genius. “Speaking with people is sometimes difficult for me.”, he says awkwardly to Agnes when trying to woo her, a boy with a crush. Mescal is so good at playing this unassuming younger version, you forget who he is playing for most of the film, even as you SEE him write Romeo Juliet in one scene and his kids perform a scene from Macbeth in another. Infact, the name William Shakespeare is said out loud only once in the film, when Agnes and her brother Bartholomew visit him in London. In doing so, Zhao steadfastly shifts the gaze onto Jessie Buckley’s Agnes. A woman without the burden of greatness in her destiny. You never wonder what Agnes will make of her life, because in showing her go through two agonising birthing sequences, the film is telling you that as a woman, she has already done more than any great playwright will ever achieve. The Secret Agent Movie Review by Sucharita - The Secret Agent left me with so many things to ponder– where intellectualism can and must overlap with activism, how technology changes our relationship with revolution, how wrong it to think that life under dictatorship will lead to some sort of utopian and well-run nation, that those who control electricity are almost always corrupt, and how films themselves can both heal and hurt, a cinema hall giving way to a literal hospital in the film’s final act. All these questions arise only because writer-director Kleber Mendonca Filho gives the viewers the space and respect, not scoffing, not preaching. And Wagner Moura leads the storytelling with a performance embodies the essence of the film- the desire for freedom while also longing to take root. The Secret Agent has already won so many awards, including Best director and Best Actor at Cannes, and is now in Indian theatres, do not miss. ---------- Hamnet is a 2025 biographical period film directed by Chloé Zhao, who co-wrote the screenplay with Maggie O'Farrell, based on the 2020 novel by O'Farrell. The film dramatises the family life of William Shakespeare and his wife Anne Hathaway as they cope with the death of their 11-year-old son Hamnet. It stars Jessie Buckley and Paul Mescal as Anne and William, alongside Emily Watson, Joe Alwyn, and Noah Jupe in supporting roles. The Secret Agent (Portuguese: O Agente Secreto; Brazilian Portuguese: [u aˈʒẽt͡ʃi seˈkɾɛtu]) is a 2025 neo-noir historical political thriller film written and directed by Kleber Mendonça Filho. It follows Armando (Wagner Moura), a former professor caught in the political turmoil in the midst of the Brazilian military dictatorship, attempting to flee persecution and resist an authoritarian regime. The supporting cast includes Carlos Francisco, Tânia Maria, Robério Diógenes, Maria Fernanda Cândido, Gabriel Leone, Alice Carvalho, Hermila Guedes, Isabél Zuaa, and Udo Kier in his final film role. -------- Sucharita Tyagi is the Vice Chairperson of the Film Critics Guild of India.
