They were playing this song, Sleepyhead, his favorite Passion Pit song, as he lay in the lobby of the Fox Theatre. It still hurts me deeply to hear this song. This is the first Facebook note, among many, that I wrote the day after he passed away. --------------------------------------------------------- Sasan... Sunday, December 13, 2009 at 6:24pm | Edit Note | Delete For those of you who are in the dark about the circumstances last night under which our beloved Sasi passed away, I will try my best to give you an overview: We were at a Passion Pit concert last night at the Fox Theatre in Pomona and were having the time of our lives. Passion Pit was arguably Sasan's favorite band at the moment and to see them live was a dream come true for him. This was meant to be an amazing Kastle (nickname for our residence) outing that would cap off undoubtedly the best quarter we've ever had in college. We danced our asses off during the first few songs and exerted all our energy into getting the lyrics down word for word. All of a sudden in the middle of the set, we turned around and saw Sasi go limp and fall back. We broke his fall but he was already unconscious so we carried him out to the lobby. Linda Jin and Matt Young tried their best to administer CPR while Gavin Aboudi and I called for the ambulance and searched for whatever additional help we could get. At this point, he kept fading in and out of consciousness as well as losing and regaining his pulse. I had never been so scared in my life. What kills us is that absolutely NONE of the security staff made the slightest effort to provide professional assistance. One guy was just standing over Linda, acting as if Sasi were just a typical college student who drank too much, when it was absolutely clear to us from his blank eyes that this was something much, much more serious. They were all just standing there like dumbfucks while we tried to revive him. You would think that at such a large music event where alcohol is served and kids are cramped/sweaty, there would be certified medical personnel on call at any given moment. No. When the paramedics arrived, they told us that he still had a pulse so we were pretty optimistic. I mean, it's Sasan...the healthiest, most physiologically gung ho one out of all of us; a triathlete who wakes up at 8 am to go on morning runs. How could he possibly fall victim to such intense physical exhaustion? It puzzles me every waking moment. But anyway they took him to the hospital and a little while later informed us while we were being briefed at the Pomona Police station that our Sasi didn't make it. It all happened so quickly, none of us can even comprehend it right now. It seems so unreal. There is no official statement on what the cause of death was, but from my perspective (I was right next to him when he collapsed), it seemed as if it were a heart-related incident. He may have had an underlying heart condition that none of us were aware of because we have just discovered that his family may have a history of heart complications. The hospital will perform an autopsy either Wednesday or Thursday so we will know then what the cause was. I am in constant contact with Mr. and Mrs. Ahoraian so I will update you guys further over the next few days. Talking to them in person at the hospital and over the phone is by far the hardest thing I've ever had to do in the 21 years that I've been alive. We are planning to organize a candlelight vigil in the very near future on campus, most likely Tuesday night because his girlfriend Jenna Pacelli is taking an urgent flight back from France. I will also let you guys know when the services are to be held after we find out the time and place. Please, PLEASE keep his family, friends and the love of his life, Jenna Pacelli, in your prayers. Sasan, I don't know why it had to be you. Your loss has sent shock waves throughout the UCLA community and your hometown. Your water polo kids will be devastated when they learn that the mentor who guided them to the league championship is no longer with them. He was soooo proud of you kids. The Kastle and your closest friends are beyond devastated but we are trying extremely hard to keep it together. I have never felt so empty in my life before. BUT, just know that we love you more than anything. If I could invent a word that has the same semantic value as the word love but is million times more powerful, I would use it in replacement every other sentence. I'll just caps lock it and see if that makes a difference: Sasi, we LOVE you and we miss you oh so much. Please feel free to tag or show this note to anyone that needs to know. Kastle forever. Family forever. LOVE forever.
