Trek to Thanale caves | EcoAdventure

Last weekend called for a visit to a centuries old cave system on the outskirts of the city. Like most Buddhist caves in our state, Thanale caves are also built amongst thick forests. These are a set of 23 caves with one Chaitya for congregational worship, stupas and various Viharas for monks to stay. The cave system is carved into the mountain by hand. On top of the mountain is the Tail-baila Plateau. The trail begins from Thanale village and is a 2 hour’s climb from there. The cave system lies in close proximity to an ancient trade route that leads to the port of Chaul. When the trade routes changed and the port of Chaul started to decline, the caves were abandoned too until their rediscovery in 1980.
