A flamboyant 1940s big-band swinger that makes you wish you were there. On this day in jazz history… On this day in 1944, saxophonist and composer Henry Threadgill was born in Chicago. Growing up on the South Side, he absorbed everything from parade bands and blues to the Chicago Symphony Orchestra before joining Muhal Richard Abrams' Experimental Band as a teenager. After serving in Vietnam with the 4th Infantry Division Band and being wounded during the 1968 Tet Offensive, Threadgill became an early member of the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians and built a career on radical sonic experimentation. His trio Air reimagined ragtime without piano. His septet Very Very Circus featured two tubas and two electric guitars, pushing against conventional jazz boundaries. In 2016, Threadgill won the Pulitzer Prize for Music for "In for a Penny, In for a Pound," making him the only Vietnam veteran ever awarded the prize. #SwingJazz #BigBandSwing #1940sJazz #DanceHallSwing #VintageSwing #BallroomSwing #BigBandInstrumental All music (including AI-assisted elements) and visuals are original, curated, and produced by Two Cats Jazz Radio.
