Margaret Bonds: Five Spiritual Songs, performed by Dr. Shana Mashego & Dr. Patrick Merrill

In this video of the opening concert of the 2024 Corcoran Music Festival at George Washington University, Dr. Shana Mashego and Dr. Patrick Merrill give the first performance of the complete set of Five Spiritual Songs in High and Low Keys by Margaret Bonds. The set includes five works: "Ev'ry Time I Feel the Spirit" (1968-69), "Hand Me Down" (ca. early 1950s), "Nebuchadnezzar" (1941), "Sinner, Please Don't Let This Harvest Pass" (1964), and Bonds's own transposition to F major of "You Can Tell the World" (familiar in its original G-major setting from the Five Spirituals first composed in 1941 and published in 1946). The five works were edited by John Michael Cooper and Louise Toppin and published by Videmus (Ann Arbor) in 2024.
