Susanna Manrubia, MNCN (CSIC). https://www.mncn.csic.es/es/quienes_s... Biological systems exhibit rich patterns in space and time that emerge from interactions across multiple organizational levels and that, often, can be reproduced through simple, mechanistic models. In this seminar, I will briefly outline my research trajectory, rooted in the physics of complex systems, and discuss how these perspectives have guided my work on evolutionary dynamics in biological populations, from large-scale evolution to molecular dynamics. The main focus will be on my research over the last decade on viral evolution, developed through a combination of empirical studies, numerical simulations, and theoretical modeling. I will emphasize the insights gained from deep sequencing of viral populations and from the visualization of molecular evolution as genotype networks. By integrating data-driven approaches with conceptual models, our work highlights both the power and the limitations of current evolutionary frameworks when confronted with real, high-dimensional biological systems.
