I remember the first, first time you said, you said that you loved me We smoked those spliffs and listened to Rod singing to Maggie I could make you laugh every time I sang Dirty Laundry Now it doesn’t sound the same, singing alone in harmony. All those songs have splinters I could see me in your eyes, cut by diamonds, But I’m passed out, sleeping tight, in your garden. Turn off the sun, the stars look so much better like an ocean. Can you still hold your eyes to them, do it slow motion? All those songs have splinters. Love isn’t as soft or as clean as you thought it would be. It’s sharper at the edges and draws warm blood when it’s unsheathed. All those songs have splinters. Memory is a minefield. Love and connection is an loose collage in a wind tunnel. If you don’t have a song that let you share all of yourself with someone else… I envy you. There is no more jarring feeling that now feels half empty. Some of us have multiple songs. Some of us have albums or artists entirely. When the songs themselves leave splinters in your ears, their sounds change. You have to check your shoes for scorpions from now on. You hold on more loosely to your moments and try to find a way to offer yourself for someone else’s comfort. There is no greater joy than making a fool of yourself and feeling it received as the earnest offering it is.
