Through months of analysis, the Distribution Group identified a processing gap between final freight staging, middle-mile transportation, and the resulting additional charges. We determined that shipments were being incorrectly weighed and classified, and that required dimensional data was not consistently captured, resulting in inaccurate rating prior to loading. Additionally, we lacked a formal audit capability to support carrier claims or provide customers with documentation validating how orders were shipped. Our solution began with a feasibility study assessing manual pallet measurement and its associated time impact, which confirmed it would create a processing bottleneck. We then conducted market research for an automated solution and selected Freightsnap and its ceiling-mounted dimensioner. This capability enabled accurate freight measurement, while integrated scale functionality automatically calculated freight class and density, eliminating the bottleneck. The Dallas facility was selected as the initial installation site to establish the Initial Operating Capability (IOC). Transitioning to Full Operating Capability (FOC) will require full integration of the dimensioner into SAP to enable automated data capture, rating validation, and enterprise reporting, and to ensure a smooth transition. In the three months since initiating the project, we have observed significant improvements in freight rating accuracy, a double-digit reduction in accessorial charges, and increased customer satisfaction and positive feedback, with the investment achieving full return on investment (ROI) within that period. DG’s mid-2026 goal in deploying the dimensioner across all three locations is to reduce shipping cost overruns, improve shipment accuracy and processing speed through correct rating, and increase customer confidence by capturing validated data for every pallet leaving the warehouse.
