Erica Poseley of Got Seat.com demonstrates how posting is a lot like kneeling. Features Chelsea Ramm on her horse Olivia. Transcription: Hi, Erica Poseley here of Got Seat.com. And this is Chelsea and Olivia (horse) and today I want to show some lunging exercises that I use to help riders post better to either learn the skill of posting or to improve their their posting technique. Posting is a kneeling exercise--not a standing up and down. And when the rider does it correctly 90% [Note: Erica meant to say 70%] is in the upper thigh muscle. A very good exercise to improve your posting and to warm up is a kneeling exercise on the ground. And I want to show you this exercise right now. So I'm going to kneel on the ground and if you can see Chelsea you can see. how her thighs are much like my thigh. From her hip to her knees is about a 45-degree angle. Now when I go to the top of the rise my quad muscles are going to lever my whole torso forward and up. My torso is going to stay the same. So, I'm just going to go forward and I can really feel my thigh working. Nothing changes in my torso. I don't want to lengthen my front. (She rises up abruptly) This would be me trying to get to the top of the rise by lifting myself up and you will see a lot of riders doing that. Some riders will start correctly and then they will kind of use their glute muscles and kind of thrust themselves forward. And that is also incorrect. Other riders will just lean forward. So again, the thigh does (should do) most of the work--it pretty much takes the weight of the whole trunk--forward--and at this point my hip is open at the top of the rise. So we really have when we are posting about 80% (or so) of weight in the thigh. Topic discussion ends.
