Of all sports, perhaps none has the global reach, wealth, and cultural significance as football. From the favelas of Brazil to the stadiums of Europe, football bridges political, socio-economic and sectoral divides and thereby offers a unique platform for uniting humanity in a shared pursuit of societal goals. In his talk, Thomas Preiss, Co-Founder of the Common Goal movement, takes us on a journey of how the world’s most popular sport can be a tool for social transformation and calls upon the multi-billion dollar football industry to make social purpose part of its DNA. Soccer does not only enthuse the masses but also has the potential to change the world. To ensure soccer reaches its potential and becomes a positive force, Thomas Preiss (among others) founded the “Common Goal” initiative. The idea: professional players, clubs and associations donate 1 percent of their income to a fund, which is used worldwide to bring UN Global Goals to fruition. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
