The Megalithic Throne of Poseidon & Rock-Cut Burials in Phalasarna, Ancient Crete | Megalithomania

The Throne of Poseidon (or Throne of Phalasarna) is carved out of solid limestone on the far western coast of Crete. It is possibly Neolithic or Bronze Age as there are rock-cut burial cists nearby. Julian Cope in 'The Megalithic European' reported on this rarely visited site 20 years ago, and it still sits within an obscure olive grove down a dirt track. Traditionally this is a Hellenistic/Roman site as part of a port, which has other features going into the sea, but the throne is unique and appears to be ceremonial or had some other purpose. Whoever sat in it, must have been very tall. The old name for Crete was Megalonissos ("The Great Island), and a few miles away are the 6 million year old footprints which have recently been in the news. Includes exclusive aerial footage.
