#gardener #growing #cinder So what exactly is soilless media? This is my definition: it’s a sterile mix of natural ingredients processed according to certain specifications and used to raise plants in controlled conditions, like greenhouses and cuttings beds. To most of us it means a bag of potting soil. Soilless media can be inorganic (e.g. sand, gravel, pebbles, perlite, rock wool, vermiculite), organic (e.g. rice hulls, peat, sawdust, straw, coconut coir) or synthetic (e.g. foam ship, sponges, moisture absorbent plastic fibre). A uniform texture that drains well but retains nutrients and water for the root system. High porosity ,Particle-size distribution to maintain good balance between air and water retention . A pH between 5.0 and 6.5, which can also be adjusted easily. Low content of soluble salts. Chemical inertia which means that the substrate does not affect the nutrient . Ability to maintain original characteristics so that it can be used for many successive cultivation cycles. Absence of pathogens and pests and free of any compounds toxic to plants. Some of the most common soilless growing mediums include peat moss, perlite, vermiculite, coco coir and sand. Generally, these mediums are mixed together rather than used alone, as each usually provides its own function.
