Director of Sunnylands Center & Gardens Michaeleen Gallagher will explore the complex relationship between landscape heritage and preservation practice at one of America's most iconic estates. Drawing from the historic legacy of Walter and Leonore Annenberg and the design vision of renowned landscape architects, the presentation will highlight the unique challenges of managing a dynamic tree canopy within a midcentury modern desert landscape. From preserving original design intent to making ecologically responsible adaptations, this talk will delve into broader themes of historic preservation, the evolution of living collections, and adaptive reuse—framed through the lens of Sunnylands as both a cultural landmark and a living laboratory. Gallagher has led the Department of Education and Environmental Programs at The Annenberg Foundation Trust at Sunnylands since 2011, drawing on a diverse background in science, environmental education, and public engagement. She holds advanced degrees and certifications in environmental policy and design, and has worked in wildlife rescue, museum education, and international teaching, while actively contributing to cultural and museum initiatives statewide. This program is presented in partnership with Sunnylands Center and Gardens.
