Hidden Gems of the Italian Alps: From Varzo to Piedmont

Five unforgettable days in the Italian Alps: quirky festivals, mountain drives, and wine in the Piedmont hills. We’re Marion and Duke — Boomers Without Borders — and in this video, we spend five unforgettable days exploring the Italian Alps. We begin in Saint-Vincent, where we enjoy the beautiful scenery and a relaxing dinner at the Parc Hotel Billia. From there, we drive to Varzo, stopping to admire Lake Maggiore along the way. In Varzo, we’re lucky to be there for the annual Palio degli Asini, a festive donkey race where neighborhoods compete in costume with plywood donkeys. It’s quirky, local, and so much fun! We also head into the mountains for a snowy hike in Alpe Devero National Park — the scenery is jaw-dropping even if snow shortens our hike. Next, we drive south to Cascina Bertolotto Wine Resort near Serole, in the heart of Piedmont’s green hills. We stop at a medieval watchtower in Roccaverano and enjoy a local dinner at Osteria del Bramante. Our Italian Alps adventure wraps up with a peaceful hike on the Circuit du Cavalet before we cross back into France for the final leg of our journey. 🍷⛰️ Donkey races, alpine roads, snow-capped trails, medieval towers, and vineyard views — it’s all in this episode.
