Autocracy is a form of government in which a single individual holds absolute and centralized power, often without legal or constitutional restraints. In an autocracy, decision-making authority is concentrated in the hands of one ruler, such as a monarch or dictator, who exercises control over all branches of government and societal functions. Citizens in an autocratic state typically have limited or no role in governance, and opposition to the ruler is often suppressed through censorship, propaganda, or force. Autocracies can provide stability and swift decision-making, especially in times of crisis, but they are frequently criticized for fostering corruption, human rights abuses, and lack of accountability. Historically, autocracies have arisen in contexts where centralized control was seen as necessary to maintain order, though they often lead to prolonged oppression and limited individual freedoms. The term contrasts with systems like democracies, where power is distributed and governed by the will of the people.
