At a time when the Trump administration is aggressively pushing through a dangerous, pro-mining agenda, Minnesota legislators need to act now to protect the Boundary Waters. In this charged hearing, a diverse array of people speak eloquently about the need to pass legislation to protect Minnesota’s waters from copper-sulfide mining and the attack by the Trump administration and its allies. Learn more about legislation needed to protect the Boundary Waters from copper-sulfide mining: https://www.friends-bwca.org/prove-it... Support Friends of the Boundary Waters: https://www.friends-bwca.org/donate Witnesses testify on behalf of three proposed bills that would address major issues with copper- sulfide mining. They are: Prove It First: The bill states that before a copper-sulfide mine in Minnesota can be permitted, there must be independent scientific proof that a copper-sulfide mine has operated elsewhere in the United States for at least ten years without causing pollution and that a mine has been closed for at least ten years without causing pollution. Bad Actor: The bill would ban Minnesota from issuing nonferrous mining permits to corporate bad actors who have violated certain international laws including corruption, bribery, or natural resources destruction. Taxpayer Protection: This legislation would require mining companies to fully fund any financial assurance package upfront and in cash. It would prevent a common tactic used by mining corporations to declare bankruptcy and leave taxpayers to clean up the mess. Speakers, in order of appearance: Chris Knopf, Executive Director, Friends of the Boundary Waters Wilderness Dr. Steven Emerman, Internationally recognized mining expert, owner Malach Consulting Fred Campbell, Retired state regulator with the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency and Minnesota Department of Natural Resources Commissioner Kelly Applegate, Commissioner of Natural Resources, Mille Lacs Band of Ojibwe Bob Tammen, Retired mine worker, citizen scientist Mike Maleska, Iron ore miner for 42 years and local union president, retired Eric Ini, Chief Equity and Partnership Officer, Minnesota Center for Environmental Advocacy Alan Thometz, Senior Finance Lecturer, University of Minnesota Claire Peterson, Freshman at the University of Minnesota
