The BEST Whiskey of 2023!? || Killowen Barantúil Cask 202

This might be my favourite whiskey of 2023! Since there's still a few months left in 2023, you know this is a good whiskey! It's as you'd expect from a Killowen Barántúil release, with their signature wild fermentation, extra long distillations in underfilled, pot stills giving a really distinct DNA which shines through despite them only having released a few bottlings up to now. It's a combination of two small ex-bourbon casks which were filled in August 2019 and February 2020. The two casks were married for six months in fresh, wet tawny port hogshead, which had a huge impact on the colour and flavour, with the peated mashbill being complimented rather than dominated by the port influence. Killowen Barantúil Cask 202 Tasting Notes: Nose: It leads with peat smoke and rhubarb crumble, the smoke, port influence and sweetness from the grains all working together. Any harsh or rough edges from the peat were rounded off and softened by the port, with a little bit of white pepper spice poking through. The longer it sat in the glass, the more the 'jammy' influence of the port casks started to shine. Palate: Very smoky and sweet, at 56.05% ABV, it's warm, but not hot, with a rich mouthfeel lending the whiskey some creamy texture which lets the caramel malt and pot still spice stand out proud. There's more spice on the palate, like some tigly Chinese sichuan pepper. Still though, the port influence is unmissable, like stewed summer fruits. Finish It's nice and long, with the ABV helping it to linger nicely. The peat smoke and sweet, stewed summer fruits gently fade into the background, leaving the spice to hold centre stage a bit longer. Ultimately, I'm quite the sucker for a port finished whiskey, and this is a VERY nice port finished whiskey.
