Celebrating Literacy Growth: A Conversation with Tamara In this inspiring video, literacy consultant Sharon Callen interviews Tamara Biddle, an early career Foundation teacher at Mt Barker South Primary School, passionate about fostering literacy development in young children. Tamara shares her journey from following rigid, scripted literacy programs to embracing a more responsive approach after her school engaged Sharon as a consultant. The school transformed its literacy instruction by restructuring timetables, creating an action team, and developing a flexible instructional model incorporating word work, reader's workshop and writer's workshop. Bookmaking emerged as a cornerstone of Tamara's approach. Beginning with class books where every child contributed a page, they progressed to individual books as children's skills developed. For those unable to write independently, teachers scribed their ideas, validating that all children have stories to tell regardless of writing ability. The classroom became a vibrant literacy community through several key practices: focusing intensively on names as meaningful high-frequency words, celebrating children's mark-making as legitimate writing, developing illustration skills, and creating opportunities for sharing. Children's excitement was palpable during sharing time, where they discussed their reading and writing with genuine enthusiasm. Tamara's conferring approach emphasises authentic engagement rather than literal comprehension, with questions that maintain children's love of reading while revealing their understanding. This approach created a classroom where every child could experience success and develop a lifelong passion for literacy.
