Hey EM aficionados! Happy Friday the 20th of February, 2026... When using Velox, applying the radial wiener filter to your atomic-resolution STEM-EDS maps can really help the atomic-level detail to pop out. However, if your mapped area is not square (or significantly deviated from a square), the filter will not work properly and your maps will probably look better without the filter applied. Let's talk about how this filter works and why it fails to work properly for non-square map areas. Please note: I am using Velox 2.15 on a Windows 7 system and cannot upgrade Velox any further without updating the operating system (which is quite expensive); the limitations I point out here with the radial wiener filter may (or may not) have been addressed and corrected in newer versions of Velox. Thank you for your support, my fellow EM aficionados, as we close in on 6,000 subscribers! Please like, subscribe, and share and leave any questions or comments you may have and I will do my best to reply as soon as possible. Video topic requests are always welcome and appreciated; I enjoy making these videos and wish I could make them more frequently, but the demands of my job make it tough to do so; I’m in charge of three S/TEMs, three dual FIB/SEM systems (a new one recently signed off on), and half of an SEM and this keeps me very busy!
