Shostakovich wrote this string quartet in three days while visiting Dresden in 1960, with the inscription "To the memory of the victims of war and Fascism". (But of course, The USSR under Stalin was very much a Fascist State, and this certainly did not escape the thoughts of Shostakovich.) Indeed, the Largo of his 5th symphony is often interpreted as A Requiem for those who perished in Stalin's Great Terror. Nazi and Soviet propaganda exaggerated the number of victims in the fire-bombing of Dresden by a factor of 10. Recent research completed in 2010 concluded that casualties numbered "only" between 18,000 and 25,000. At the time, Dresden was overflowing with refugees fleeing the advance of the Red Army from the East.
