Welcome to All of History! Have at All Papists Protector Somerset was, above all else, a soldier; his sphere was war. From the earliest days of the Protectorate, he was concerned with national defenses. He had proven his military capabilities in that country by mounting a successful invasion and an effective border raid in two successive years, and his eyes were once again turned toward Scotland. In 1543, Prince Edward had been betrothed to Mary, the infant Queen of Scots, but nothing had come of it. Yet Somerset still publicly expressed hopes of a union between the two countries, envisioning a kingdom of "Great Britain" united by the strength of the reformed religion. The Barns of Crediton In the first years of the young king’s reign, both social and religious divisions became apparent. “In times past,” Hugh Latimer, the most popular preacher of the day, said in a sermon, “men were full of compassion; but now there is no pity. In London, a man’s brother shall die in the streets from cold; he shall lie sick at the door, between stock and stock and then perish from hunger.” The authorities had debased the coinage, unleashing further waves of inflation upon an already impoverished country. Between 1540 and 1547, prices rose by 46 percent, and by 1549, they had increased by another 11 percent. The ever-growing population exacerbated the plight of the poor, particularly agricultural laborers. Food was expensive; wages were low. This period, known as the “price revolution,” was marked by widespread dearth and distress. Even the administration itself struggled to pay its debts. 00:00 Have at All Papists 27:59 The Barns of Crediton
