B:11 – Melodie (No. 5 from Skizzen, Op. 77) by Heinrich Hofmann (1842 – 1902) Note from ABRSM Composed in an expressive and lyrical style, this piece focuses on a singing melody with an oscillating accompaniment that requires a nice legato touch. The pulse and tempo have to be consistent, without being too assertive on the main beats. The main notes in the left hand need to be brought out as they coincide with the melodic notes of the right hand. With regular 4-bar phrases, the melody gradually rises and falls. Subtle, controlled changes in the dynamics would help to bring about the natural direction of the melodic shape. With keeping fingers close to the keyboard, the evenness of the left hand will bring about a sense of calmness and metrical coherence. Yet, there are moments where slowing down for expressive purpose are expected, particularly at bars 17-18 and 25-26. Note from channel Difficulty evaluation (for Grade 3): 7/10 This piece presents a simple yet warmly optimistic character, requiring a clear sense of balance and refinement. Written in 4/4 time, the left-hand quaver accompaniment should be shaped with particular care: the second and fourth quavers in each group must always remain gentle and light. Although the first and third quavers carry slightly more weight, the entire left-hand part must consistently function as a supporting voice, never drawing attention away from the main melodic line in the right hand. Several passages share close similarities, notably bars 1–2, 5–6, and 19–20. Recognising these parallel ideas will help with both musical continuity and secure memorisation. Throughout the piece, the right hand should be responsible for shaping most of the dynamic expression, allowing the melody to sing freely and naturally above the accompaniment. The dynamic range is intentionally restrained, spanning only from pianissimo to mezzo forte. This makes careful control of tone and shading especially important. Any crescendo or diminuendo indicated by hairpins should be clearly projected through the melodic line rather than through increased weight in the accompaniment. The most technically demanding passage occurs between bars 21 and 23, where precise coordination between the hands is essential. Practising this section slowly and hands separately will help ensure accurate synchronisation. Overall, the aim is to preserve clarity, balance, and a gentle lyrical flow, allowing the music’s modest charm to speak with elegance and ease. #pianogradepathway #abrsmpiano #romanticpiano
