COLUMBUS (Dawn Faugl) -- A Dayton Vietnam war veteran who suffered a disfiguring cancer is now suing the VA hospital, claiming the cancer was never properly diagnosed or treated. Bill Kessler says in early 2010, he noticed a lump on his penis. He says his primary doctor at the Dayton VA told him he thought it was just a cyst, and not to worry about it. But if it didn't go away, he'd look at it again. "Well, then one lump turned into two lumps, and I started to complain and showed him, because I was starting to bleed," Kessler says. The veteran claims the doctor recommended a procedure, but told him all the scipts at the Dayton VA were broken, and had been sent out for repair. Kessler says the VA tried to outsource the procedure to other facilities, but kept canceling the appointment. And that's when a third lump developed on his penis. Nearly a year after Kessler first went to the VA, the procedure was finally performed, cancerous lesions were found, and he was sent to a surgeon in Cincinnati. "(He) took one look at it and said that's go to go now. So they did a penectomy on me," Kessler said. In his medical records, the VA admits "there was a delay in his diagnosis." They offered an apology, but Kessler says that's no consolation after his cancer and penis amputation. "There's so much bureaucracy and craziness that goes on...people that just don't give a dam about the veterans," Kessler said.
