History of USA lectures for CSS Few Early settlers : 1 Erik the Red : Founder of the first European settlement on Greenland (с 986) and father of Leif Eriksson.A native of Norway, Erik grew up in Iceland; exiled for manslaughter с 980, he set sail and landed on Greenland. With 350 colonists he founded a colony that numbered about 1,000 settlers by AD 1000. In 1002 the colony was ravaged by sickness, and it gradually died out, though other Norse settlements in Greenland continued. Erik's story is told in the Icelandic Eiríks saga. Norse saga : The Norse sagas or Viking sagas are stories about ancient Scandinavian and Germanic history, about early Viking voyages, about migration to Iceland, and of feuds between Icelandic families. One of them, the Gutasaga, was written on Gotland and deals with the early history of the Gotlanders. They were written in the Old Norse language. 2 Christopher Columbus n. (1451-1506) Italian explorer and navigator who discovered America in 1492, The Brits, ruled by establishing control of “Courts and Coin” The Brits would let their colonies self govern only in matters that don’t affect the law or finances/trade, which of course means the Colonizers controlled almost everything. Most of American law is rooted in English tradition, even today. (Interestingly Louisiana has local laws based more on the French legal tradition which tends to be kinder to women in family law, but I digress). The most interesting development in colonial law in America were the laws that were established that were divergent/SEPARATE from English law because they had to have had a specific purpose to be an exception. (Slavery on an industrial scale unlike slavery elsewhere, and control of available white women).
