Of the first PERN trilogy, this was the book I was most excited about, it was the one that disappointed me the most. I liked the relationship between Jaxom and his dragon Ruth, but I found his character very bland and one dimensional. The book was also very slow and went over things that had been dealt with in previous novels like the dragon mating process which just kept coming back and I found myself skipping through quite a few pages to get through it. This novel is one of the founding blocks for dragons in fantasy today and I really wanted to like it but just didn't work for me.
