Pocono! Horrifying Old School NASCAR Wrecks and Crashes! Which is the Worst? Was it Too Dangerous?

I do not own some of the footage in this video, all credit goes to the respective owners: NASCAR, NASCAR Media Group, Fox Sports, TNT, NBC, NBC Sports, ESPN. Pocono Raceway in Long Pond, Pennsylvania has been hosting at least one NASCAR Cup race per season since 1974. It hosted two races per season from 1982 until 2021 when it was cut back to 1 race, as it still is today. I was fortunate enough to be in attendance at every NASCAR Cup race at Pocono from 1976, when I was 10 years old and saw the king, Richard Petty, get one his 200 career wins, and 1992 when I was in my mid-twenties and saw two of my favorite drivers, Alan Kulwicki and Darrell Waltrip, take home the checkered flag. It was Kulwicki’s final win on his way to the ‘92 championship, before his untimely death in 1993. Pocono is unique, being the only track on the schedule that has three turns. Something not widely known is that each of those three turns is based on a turn from another racetrack.Track designer Rodger Ward designed turn one after Trenton Speedway, which before it was torn down was another very unique track I used to go to in New Jersey. Turn two was modeled after Indianapolis Motor Speedway, and the third turn is a replication of the Milwaukee Mile. This track has certainly earned its reputation as a dangerous track, especially before major safety improvements were made beginning in 2010, which have continued to be made ever since. I have to say, doing the research for this video and reliving those bad wrecks was more of an emotional experience for me than I thought it would be, and was a reminder of just how harsh our favorite sport can be and how far it has come, in the area of safety. Okay, here we go, the worst old-school NASCAR wrecks at Pocono in the NASCAR Cup Series in chronological order. 1980 - Richard Petty and Darrell Waltrip - This first wreck was especially memorable for me, because I’m a big Darrell Waltrip fan, and my Dad, who brought me to all of these races, was a Richard Petty fan. Here’s a clip from NASCAR on Fox, with Chris Economaki and Sir Jackie Stewart, on the call. It was actually a blown right front tire that sent Petty into the wall, he broke his neck in the accident. Waltrip was relatively okay. 1982 - Dale Earhardt and Tim Richmond - In 1982 Dale Earnhardt was running the number 15 for Bud Moore. On lap 136 of the July, 1982 Mountain Dew 500 at Pocono he tried to get underneath Tim Richmond in turn 1. Richmond was driving the JD Stacy number 2 car. I had a great view of this one, our seats were down towards turn 1. As you can see, Dale got the worst of it, hitting the wall hard and rolling over as the car slid along the top of the wall. He somehow got out of the car, but was badly injured. Tim Richmond ran over and helped him off of the track. Dale said in an interview that he thought Richmond was coming over to whip his butt. Earnhardt earned his tough customer nickname that day. He broke his leg in that wreck, but never told NASCAR. He didn’t miss a single race due to the injury. 1988 - Bobby Allison and Jocko Maggiacomo - On the first lap of the 1988 Miller High-Life 500, I witnessed the sad end of Bobby Allison’s career. Only months earlier, I attended the 1988 Daytona 500 and saw him win The Great American Race for the second time, with his son Davey finishing right behind him. It was an amazing feel-good day. This race would be much different. Allison blew a tire in the Stavola Brothers Miller High Life number 12, sending him into the wall in turn 2. His car stopped sideways in the middle of the track and was t-boned by Jocko Maggiacomo in the driver's side door. It’s estimated that Jocko’s car was travelling at about 150 miles per hour at the point of impact. Jocko fractured his ribs and broke an ankle, needed some stitches, and had some head trauma. Allison had a severe concussion, a fractured leg, blunt abdominal trauma, internal bleeding, and was unconscious for days. Emergency surgery to relieve pressure on his brain saved his life that day. I have read that he was pronounced dead at one point. He spent months in the hospital, and years in rehab but never really recovered. Unfortunately, Bobby suffered such bad memory loss that he never could remember that 1988 Daytona 500 win, with his son Davey finishing second. On November 9th, 2024, Bobby Allison passed away. Rest in peace Bobby. 1992 - Davey Allison - Four years later it was Davey’s turn. Here are three legends - Bob Jenkins, Benny Parsons, and Ned Jarrett with the call. Allison was airlifted to the hospital with a broken arm, broken wrist, broken collarbone, and a concussion, but he did survive. He later showed us his bloodshot eyes at a press conference. Davey started the next race to get the points, but was relieved early. He narrowly missed winning the championship in the last race of that year, in the historic 1992 Atlanta race.
