If you’ve ever traveled in Thailand, you know that even the smallest countryside pubs often have live music performances. One night while sitting in a small rural pub in Thailand, I was enjoying a beer and listening to a young singer performing with a guitarist. Even though there were only a few people in the audience, she sang with incredible passion. As a way to show appreciation, I tipped her 100 baht, something I often do when I enjoy a performance. Later that night, she even asked if I had a song request and sang a Palmy song for me. But after the show ended, something unexpected happened. While the two performers were packing up their equipment, they suddenly began arguing about me. The guitarist seemed suspicious and asked her if she was interested in “that Korean man” (many foreigners get mistaken for Korean in Thailand). I felt incredibly awkward because all I had done was admire her singing and tip her. Feeling a bit guilty, I decided to send her an additional 200 baht tip using e-payment. I hoped they would use it to have a nice meal together after the show and make up. But if I’m being honest… part of me also wondered if she might be touched by my gesture. Sometimes small moments during travel turn into unexpected human stories. This was one of them.
