Righto, let’s get stuck into it. Tonight I’m out foraging through the inner Melbourne suburbs, feeling a bit restless, and checking out cycling infrastructure and the current heated "habitat" debates around Elizabeth Street in Richmond. I’m a car owner too, and the "Cyclist vs. Motorist" myth is made up by Galahs. Everyone is just trying to get from A to B safely and efficiently. There’s a lot of talk that protected bike lanes take away from drivers, or the classic furphy that cyclists don't pay for the roads. Newsflash: in Australia, everyone pays taxes, whether you’re behind the wheel or on two wheels. If someone chooses to commute by bike or public transport, their tax dollars still fund the roads we drive on, so why shouldn't the reverse be true? Safer bike paths actually mean fewer cars in your way, not more. It’s about having the option to choose how you move. Taking that choice away from your neighbour because you don't use it, is just not cricket. Just like our native wildlife struggling with changing habitats, we shouldn't be penalised just for existing on the road. Sharing the road and being thoughtful of others is cool. Get amongst it.
