Wilhelm II was born on January 27, 1859, Germany did not exist as a unified nation. It consisted of a number of independent nations. Wilhlem's grandfather, Wilhelm I, was the king of Prussia, one of the largest and most powerful German-speaking nations in Europe. Wilhelm's father was Frederick III and his mother was Victoria, the daughter of Queen Victoria of the United Kingdom. The fact that Wilhelm's grandmother was the queen of England made it ironic that the British and German monarchs during World War I were, in fact, cousins. In 1871, many of the German-speaking countries of Europe united to form the German Empire. The king of Prussia was chosen to be the emperor of this new mega state. As such, Wilhelm's grandfather became the first Kaiser of the German Empire. Wilhelm suffered from a birth defect that made his left arm much shorter than his right. This condition affected him his entire life, and many historians believe that it may have had a negative psychological impact on the development of his character. Some historians have even speculated that Wilhelm may have had an intellectual impairment, as well. As a boy, Wilhelm was educated by tutors. After graduating, he studied for some time at the University of Bonn, but never took a degree.
