There are lots of concerns about battery-electric commercial semis. Unresolved issues include tire wear and tear, technology conversion costs, no nationwide charging infrastructure, and range anxiety. What about battery swapping? Could simply swapping out one depleted truck battery for a fully charged one be the answer to some of these critical issues? Just ask China. In 2024, around 30,000 heavy commercial vehicles were sold with battery swapping capabilities. Could this work in the U.S.? Meet Horizon Motors. The Ohio-based company is going all in with battery swapping. Clean Trucking Senior Editor Jay Traugott speaks to Horizon CEO Sean Jones at the 2025 ACT Expo in Anaheim, California about his company's EV commercial truck lineup and the battery swap process. Sean explains that as a cab and chassis manufacturer, it was important to talk to municipalities about their commercial truck needs. They want tow trucks, garbage trucks, street sweepers, and dump trucks. Horizon answered their call with a full lineup of commercial trucks ranging from Class 3 to 8 that have been designed for a variety of applications. Most importantly, Horizon's five-minute battery swap technology allows for minimal downtime and little to no range anxiety. Battery swapping is really nothing new; it's been used in forklift technology for years. Is it time to apply it to commercial trucks? Horizon Motors wants to make that happen.
