Roy Linwood Clark (April 15, 1933 – November 15, 2018) was an American country music icon celebrated for his prodigious multi-instrumental talents—guitar, banjo, fiddle—and his charismatic stage presence. Rising from humble beginnings in Meherrin, Virginia and Washington, D.C., he earned national attention by winning banjo competitions as a teen and touring with country greats like Hank Williams and Jimmy Dean . Clark skyrocketed to stardom in the 1960s with hits such as “The Tips of My Fingers” and “Yesterday, When I Was Young,” and became a household name as the co-host of the long‑running TV variety show Hee Haw from 1969 to 1997, reaching up to 30 million viewers weekly . He also guest-hosted The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson during the 1970s, toured the Soviet Union in 1976, and helped transform Branson, Missouri into a live-music hub by opening his own theatre in 1983 . A member of the Grand Ole Opry (1987) and inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame (2009), Clark’s legacy endures through his warm humor, virtuosic performances, and role as a cultural ambassador for country music
