9/10/1937 The Luodian counterattack was a major Chinese offensive action during the Battle of Shanghai, launched in late September 1937 in an attempt to reverse Japanese gains north of the city. After Japanese amphibious landings and advances toward Luodian threatened to outflank the main Chinese defensive line, the National Revolutionary Army committed multiple units to counterattack around the town and its surrounding fields, canals, and villages. Chinese commanders hoped that a determined push could retake Luodian, disrupt Japanese momentum, and restore a stable defensive front protecting Shanghai’s northern approaches. The counterattack quickly ran into the realities of Japanese superiority in firepower. Japanese troops around Luodian were supported by artillery, tanks, aircraft, and naval gunfire, while Chinese forces relied largely on infantry assaults with limited artillery and anti-armor weapons. Fighting was extremely costly, with repeated Chinese attacks across open ground suffering heavy losses for only temporary gains. Although Chinese troops fought with determination and at times penetrated Japanese positions, the counterattack ultimately failed, leaving Luodian in Japanese hands. Its failure further weakened the Chinese northern flank and paved the way for the Japanese capture of Dachang, a decisive step toward the collapse of Chinese defenses in the Shanghai campaign.
