The track was largely recorded in May and June 1967, shortly after the Sgt. Pepper sessions, and is built around a single theme presented in five distinct sections. The first recording session took place on May 17th, 1967, a session that was extensively photographed. During this date, the band rehearsed and recorded the song’s opening section, with John on piano, George on guitar, and Ringo on drums. Paul’s exact role during the basic track remains unclear : while he is frequently seen holding his Epiphone Casino in session photographs, he definitely overdubbed a bass part later that same day. This section presents the core You Know My Name theme in a groovy, mid-tempo rock style. The remaining four sections of the song were recorded on June 8th, 1967, during a session that included several guests. The second section reimagines the theme as an upbeat ska-influenced passage, driven by offbeat guitar stabs played by George (and possibly Paul) and Brian Jones, the Rolling Stones' rhythm guitarist, playing saxophone. The third section shifts into a laid-back Latin jazz style, featuring extensive percussion including timbales, congas, skulls, cowbell, and shakers alongside a piano part played by Paul. The fourth section, although recorded last, is designed as a humorous interlude, evoking a Monty Python-like absurdity, complete with whistles and silly vocals by John and Paul. The final section returns to a jazz-oriented, piano-led texture, with John muttering improvised syllables, George adding atonal vibraphone lines, and Brian Jones delivering a deliberately rough-edged saxophone solo. The song was then shelved for two years until John and Paul finally added their vocals to the track in April 1969. John initially intended to release the track as part of a Plastic Ono Band project, alongside What’s The New Mary Jane. However, Paul, George, and Ringo objected, arguing that the recording was clearly a Beatles performance featuring all four members. As a result, the song was ultimately released as the B-side to Let It Be. This version was edited by nearly two minutes and issued only in mono. A stereo remix later appeared on Anthology 2, though it omitted certain elements present in the original mono mix. By combining both sources and remixing them in stereo, I was able to reconstruct the complete 6:13 version of the track, which will be released shortly. Enjoy this silly track fully deconstructed!
