Laketha Humphrey-McCowan, a 36-year-old Oakland mother and entrepreneur, was shot and killed on February 26, 2023, allegedly by her husband, 49-year-old Nathaniel McCowan, during a violent argument that ended with her body found on Interstate 580. Nathaniel, who had previously served time for a 1998 voluntary manslaughter conviction tied to the brutal killing of his brother’s mistress, Yulanda Dedmon, married Laketha in August 2018 despite his violent past. For nearly two years after Laketha’s death, he remained free until his arrest on January 2, 2025, at Sky River Casino. He is now charged with murder, corporal injury to a partner, and firearm possession by a felon, facing up to 56 years to life in prison.
