Glider Pilot Michael Samek tells his experience flying the disastrous mission codenamed Ladbroke. Although a British operation, 22 American CG-4A Glider Pilots volunteered to fly this mission with their British counterpart. Ladbroke was the glider Airborne element of Operation Husky, the invasion of Sicily on 9 July 1943. 135 gliders flew in Ladbroke and only 49 made land. Of the 22 American glider pilots only three made landfall and of the 19 who ended in the sea, five drowned. This video is told in the form of a letter written to Mrs Yates who asked Michael to explain how her nephew, Kenny Hollingshead, was killed. Michael explains in detail starting with how they made the decision to go.
