Computer History: This original vintage IBM program is titled: “An Engineer Looks at Electronic Computing” (with special focus on the IBM 1130 computer of 1965). The narrator is Dr. Vincent Vitagliano (1927-2015) an IBM Scientific Marketing Representative and professional engineer who worked for IBM for 26 years. The film uses the IBM 1130 computer to illustrate the many ways digital computers can benefit various aspects of engineering. The 1130, announced in 1965, was the lowest-priced computer IBM produced up to that time. It became extremely popular in engineering and mathematical applications and in commercial business data processing as well. It was a binary 16-bit machine, and utilized core memory but transistor circuitry. Disk storage was through attached 2310 storage drives, with 2315 disk packs. It rented for the comparatively low cost of $700 per month required much less floor space than larger systems. Over 10,000 units were ultimately sold. It could also be used as an input processor for the System/360 (also seen in the film). The film also provides a detailed look at how the FORTRAN programming language lets the engineer communicate with and utilize the IBM 1130 computer for a wide variety of applications. * A partial film restoration by Computer History Archives Project - CHAP, uploaded for educational and historical value and comment. 2k and 4k Stock Footage available from Periscope Film http://www.periscopefilm.com Recommended Web Sites & Museums for Reference: technikum29 Living Museum, IBM 1130 System blog at: https://www.technikum29.de/en/compute...
