Well, as the name suggests, recurrent dislocation of the shoulder means that the ball and the socket joint are dislocating or the ball is coming out of the socket repeatedly that repeats the recurrent dislocation of the shoulder. So, why it happens commonly in the shoulder is because as we see here, this is a model of the shoulder joint. It is made of a cup, it is a very shallow cup and a ball which is sizeable. Because the cup is a shallow cup and it is all the muscles which are holding the shoulder, there is a very higher chance of dislocation of the shoulder . It is more common in people who are loose jointed wherein they can have extension of the elbow more than other people, extension of the knee more than other people. In such people, it is commonly seen the recurrent dislocation of the shoulder. Whenever it is recurrent, it means, there is a tear of the labrum or the lip of the shoulder. So, in front of the cup, in this region, there is a lip in the shallow socket which augments the depth of the socket . If there is a tear of the labrum or the lip, it can cause repeated dislocations of the shoulder. In such a scenario, we do a keyhole surgery or arthroscopy and we actually reattach the labrum to the bone using anchors, so that the shoulder can function normally. The advantage of an arthroscopic procedure over an open procedure is the very limited disability in the future in the terms of range of motion. When we do an open procedure there is a higher chance of loss of movement of the shoulder, prolonged pain, because of the open surgery itself, and scarring. While, however when we do an arthroscopic procedure, we can avoid all these things and return to normal activities by arthroscopic surgery.
