Lower Limb: Gluteal Region | Arteries of Gluteal Region | Medical Student Tips and Mnemonics

sqadia.com is back with another video on the anatomy of the lower limb. In this video, we have discussed the gluteal region of the lower limb. The gluteal region overlies the side and back of the pelvis, extending from the iliac crest above to the gluteal fold below. In this video, we will talk about the gluteal muscles, nerves, and vessels in the gluteal region. ▬ 📃 Gluteal Region ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ The gluteal region comprises the back and side of the pelvis. Extending from the iliac crest above to the gluteal fold below. The surface anatomical landmarks of this region are: ⚫️ Buttocks – The subcutaneous rounded bulge of fat found at the lower end of the gluteal region ⚫️ Natal Cleft – Median cleft that separates the two buttocks ⚫️ Ischial Tuberosity - Large bony prominence that lies deep to the lower border of the gluteus maximus ⚫️ Iliac Crest - Thick curved bony ridge felt in a groove in the lower margin of the waist. The hands spanning the waist are often supported by the iliac crest. The gluteal region is covered by a layer of deep and superficial fascia. The superficial fascia contains: 👉 Cutaneous Nerves 🔴 The upper anterior part is supplied by the lateral cutaneous branches of the subcostal and iliohypogastric nerves 🔴 The lower anterior part is supplied by branches from the posterior division of the lateral cutaneous nerve of the thigh. 🔴 The upper posterior part is supplied by the posterior primary rami of spinal nerves L1, 2, 3, and S1, 2, 3. 🔴 The lower posterior part is supplied by branches from the posterior cutaneous nerve of the thigh, and the perforating cutaneous nerve. 👉 Cutaneous Vessels The cutaneous blood supply of the gluteal region comes from the branches of: 🔵 Superior Gluteal Artery 🔵 Inferior Gluteal Artery 👉 Lymphatics The lymphatics from the gluteal region drain into the lateral group of the superficial inguinal lymph nodes. ▬ 📃 Muscles of the Gluteal Region ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ The gluteal muscles are the most superficial group of the posterior hip and thigh muscles. This muscle group consists of: 🟢 Gluteus Maximus 🟢 Gluteus Medius 🟢 Gluteus Minimus 🟢 Piriformis 🟢 Superior and Inferior Gemelli 🟢 Obturator internus 🟢 Obturator externus 🟢 Quadratus Femoris 🟢 The Tensor Fasciae Latae 👉 Gluteus Maximus It is a large muscle that covers the gluteal region. Other gluteal muscles lie deep to the gluteus maximus. It is an antigravity muscle that abducts, extends and laterally rotates the thigh at the hip joint. 👉 Gluteus Medius It is a fan-shaped muscle that lies underneath the gluteus maximus. The muscle is innervated by the inferior gluteal nerve and is a strong abductor, extender, and medial rotator of the thigh at the hip joint. 👉 Gluteus Minimus Lies deep to the other two gluteal muscles. It covers the anchor head of the rectus femoris and the capsule of the hip joint. To go through the other gluteal muscles, watch the full video and learn the names of all the gluteal muscles with the help of a mnemonic! ▬ 📃 Nerves of the Gluteal Region ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ Other than the cutaneous nerve supply to the gluteal region, several nerves innervate the gluteal muscles. These nerves are: 🔵 Superior Gluteal Nerve 🔵 Inferior Gluteal Nerve 🔵 Pudendal Nerve 🔵 Nerve to the Obturator Internus 🔵 Nerve to the Quadratus Femoris 🔵 Posterior Cutaneous Nerve of the Thigh 🔵 Sciatic Nerve ▬ 📃 Arteries of the Gluteal Region ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ Other than the cutaneous vessels that supply to the gluteal region, the arteries that supply the gluteal region are: 🟣 Superior Gluteal Artery 🟣 Inferior Gluteal Artery 🟣 Inferior Pudendal Artery and its Branches 🟣 Trochanteric Anastomosis 🟣 Cruciate Anastomosis You can watch the video to go through the nerve and arteries of the gluteal region one by one. ▬ 🎬 5500+ sqadia.com Medical Videos ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ 👩🏻‍⚕️ Accessible Medical Student Education 24/7/365 💡 Simplifying Medical Learning 💪 Study Hard, Dream Big, Achieve More
