Pradaxa is a blood thinner and is designed to help prevent blood clots in patients who are susceptible to heart issues. Pradaxa was touted as a safer version and more compatible with different types of food then comparable drugs like Coumadin. The risk of either of these drugs is a bleeding event. This could mean gastro-intestinal bleeds, bleeding behind the eyes, bleeding on the brain, and cerebral or cranial hemorrhaging. While both medications carry these risks, traditional blood thinners have antidotes that stop the bleeding quicker. Pradaxa has no known effective antidote. The drug stays in the body nearly 12 hours, making it very difficult -- if not impossible -- to stop a bleeding event. The drug lends itself to being risky for bleeds with even minor injuries. Dialysis seems to be the only thing that is helpful in these situations when the bleeding won't stop, but it comes with its own risks.
