This beautifully packaged 120-CD set, containing all of Eugene Ormandy's mono recordings for Columbia Records, is a genuine collector's item. It's also a welcome corrective to many of the myths surrounding the conductor: that he was not a persuasive exponent of the German classics, that he did poorly in music of the eighteenth century, that he was a bit dull and concerned only with producing a rich, blended sonority--none of it turns out to be true. Indeed, there are some remarkable surprises in this set, and I spend a good ninety minutes telling you about them. For that reason, you may want to sample this video in bits. I'm sorry that it's so long, but as so many of these performances have been unavailable for over half a century, they effectively represent new material. Furthermore, the care lavished on this project by Producer Robert Russ and his team at Sony calls out for extended and detailed discussion.
