When it comes to fragile and conflict-affected situations, you may think of the Blue Helmets or non-governmental actors. But with extreme poverty becoming increasingly concentrated in countries impacted by Fragility, Conflict, and Violence (FCV), the World Bank is stepping up its involvement – moving resources and personnel ever closer to the front lines of poverty alleviation and economic development. From its creation in the 1940s, the World Bank has worked to help countries after times of conflict and violence – indeed, its first loan was to France after World War II. Since then, the World Bank has evolved and is now refocusing on countries affected by fragility, conflict, and violence – where around half of the world’s extreme poor are expected to live by 2030.
