Wiliwilinui Ridge Trail: https://www.alltrails.com/trail/hawai... This is one of my favorite hikes on O’ahu because it’s close to town, doesn’t get super crowded, and offers incredible views. The Wiliwilinui Ridge Trail is roughly 8 miles or a 20-minute drive from Waikiki, and the trailhead is in a gated community called Waialae Iki. When you get to the guard shack, you’re going to need to show your driver’s license, and they’re going to write down your license plate and hand you a parking pass. After you pass security, you drive through the bougie neighborhood to get to the parking lot at the top. There are only a limited number of stalls, so if you do the hike on a weekend or holiday, for example, and the lot is full, you’re going to have to park before the guard shack then walk to the trailhead from there, which is about a mile. If you’re lucky enough to find a parking spot, you can begin the 4.7 miles out and back hike. The trail starts paved then moves into a wide dirt road. The US Army built the trail in 1941 and was initially used as a service road. The views at the beginning of the hike aren’t anything write home about, but trust me, power through because it’ll all be worth it. After hiking for about an hour, you’re going to make it to the first set of stairs… this is where your ascent to a little over 1,600ft in elevation kicks into high gear. As you can see, these are some steep ass stairs. The stairs make the trail easier to navigate, but also they aid in preventing erosion. I suggest checking the weather beforehand and don’t go when it’s raining as this steeper section will be muddy, slippery, and potentially dangerous. I highly recommend wearing hiking shoes with good traction, so you’re not slipping and sliding everywhere. As you slowly make your way toward the top, try your best to ignore the pain pulsing through your legs, and don’t forget to take in the serene beauty of your surroundings. You’ll eventually pass the communications tower, and within minutes you’ll have finally made it to the end of the trail. If you go on a clear day, you can see stunning views of Kualoa, Lanikai, and East O’ahu. I’d rate this trail as moderately difficult, but these views are so worth it. Once you’re done taking in the beauty, you can carefully make your way back down the trail. Okay, here are my tips if you decide to hike the Wiliwilinui Ridge Trail: Allow yourself 3-4 hours to complete the roundtrip hike. Go in the morning and avoid weekends/holidays to ensure yourself one of the limited parking stalls at the beginning of the trailhead. Bring lots of water, snacks, sunscreen, and good hiking shoes. If you desire unobstructed views, check the weather beforehand and attempt to go on a sunny day. However, whether you go on a sunny day or a cloudy day, the Wiliwilinui ridge trail is worth doing. You get away from the Waikiki crowds and experience the true essence of the island. OUTRO SONG: / futurejames SUBSCRIBE ON YOUTUBE: shorturl.at/fwCX0
