What Is Ankle Fracture? Ankle fractures are among the most common of the bone and joint fractures. Often, the high intensity of pain, the inability to walk, or concern that a bone may be fractured is what might make one to seek emergency care. For the most part, people’s concern is the same as the doctor's: Is there a fractured bone? It is often impossible to diagnose a fracture rather than a dislocation, a sprain or tendon injury without having ankle x-rays. The ankle joint comprises of three bones coming together, the tibia, fibula and talus. Any one or more of these bones can fracture. A fracture is a medical term refers to a crack or break of a bone. So, an ankle fracture can be just a small crack in one of these bones or a complete break of one or more of these bones. What Are The Symptoms of Ankle Fracture? Symptoms of ankle fractures are very easily noticeable. One might experience as follows: •Pain around the area of fracture, which stops you from moving around or walking. •Swelling around the injured area suggests that either there is soft tissue damage or fluid in the joint. •Stretched skin. •Exposed bone. •Ankle being in an odd position One should go to doctor if: •One cannot walk normally or put any weight on their ankle. •You have intolerable pain. •One notices any signs of an ankle fracture mentioned above. What Causes Ankle Fractures? The most common causes of Ankle Fractures include: •Automobile accidents. The crushing injuries that are common in automobile accidents can cause fractures that require surgical repair. •Weak bones. If one has weak bones due to any reason, may be due to insufficient nutrition or pathological condition, then one is more prone to bone fractures. •Heavy weight impact. Dropping anything heavy on one’s foot is a common cause of fractures. •Missteps. Sometimes missteps like just putting one’s foot down wrong may result in a fractured bone. •Overuse. Repetitive strain or overuse fractures are common in the weight-bearing bones of ankles. These small cracks are often caused over time by repetitive force or overuse, such as work related repetitive overuse or long distance running. How Ankle Fracture Surgery Is Done? Depending on the degree of ankle injury, ankle fracture surgery can be performed as an inpatient or an outpatient. Any major ankle fracture surgery will definitely require a hospital stay. Often, most ankle surgeries are performed under regional, spinal or general anesthesia. Most ankle fracture surgeries involve open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF). An incision is made over the ankle to clearly view the fractured bones. The pieces of the fractured bones are placed back together which is known as open reduction. The broken or fractured bones are then held together which is known as internal fixation, in this correct position with metal plates and/or screws. This internal fixation gives stability to the broken bones, so movement can begin shortly after surgery as the ankle fracture heals. The patient will be sent to recovery room to observe for any complications of post procedure and discharged as per the hospital protocol.
