Welcome to your regular end of the week immersion into the realms of olde antiquity, with Dungeon Synth Sunday on Transmissions from the Dark! Our black metal adjacent adventures begin with a split release of deep medieval rural synth; the first tape to be released on new French label, Mystical Cloister Records, who I will be bringing regular relics from in future editions. I am honoured to present this split between Maelifell and Garvalf - two pioneers of early dungeon synth, Maelifell, (also releasing as Au Milieu des Arbres and Arden) producing minimal, lo-fi releases of medieval ambient and Garvalf experimenting with renaissance inspired blackened chiptune from the late 90s. The two artists’ paths were intended to entwine during those early years, but have only just managed to cross this year. Maelifell opens the split with a composition that layers into a rich tapestry of worldly detail through relatively minimalist tones that shimmer and drone with a graceful, sombre pace. Then Garvalf expands the narrative even further into an adventurous epic of RPG soundtracking. An excellent, complementary pairing of artists and imaginative soundscapes. The spit is released in a limited edition of 40 DIY C90 cassette with high-definition one-sided J-Card.
