Soprano Katie Morse performs "Love" by Ned Rorem during her junior recital. She is accompanied by pianist John Clodfelter. The text describes a girl who is learning that love is everywhere she turns. She begins the song in a confused but calm manner, yet as the piece continues it’s as if she is catching on to the idea that love is in all places. It is in the sky when she looks up, it is in the shade when she is resting, it’s in each flower she sees, and it’s even with her when she is overcome with sadness. The harmony of this piece is peaceful and flowing, yet dissonant as it builds toward the end when she realizes that love is a good thing and is with her all the time. Lyrics Turn I my looks unto the skies, Love with his arrows wounds my eyes; If so I gaze upon the ground, Love then in every flower is found; Search I the shade to fly my pain, Love meets me in the shade again; Want I to walk in secret grove, E'en there I meet with sacred love; If so I bathe me in the spring, E'en on the brink I hear him sing; If so I meditate alone, He will be partner to my moan; If so I mourn, he weeps with me, And where I am, there will he be. This performance was recorded during a socially distanced recital with limited audience capacity.
