There is an extensive history in this area, from the Mississippian culture, the Spanish with Hernando De Soto, the Muscogee people, and the Great Depression. Cheaha Mountain’s current look has a lot to do with the efforts put in by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s. They built many of the structures still in use around Cheaha State Park.
